A Better Sense of Smell: Humans vs. Animals
We’ve all been told and heard the rumors,or should I say misconceptions, that animals have a better sense of smell than humans.
What if I told you that's a big myth?
*According to Rutgers University-New Brunswick neuroscientist John McGann, associate professor in the Department of Psychology, School of Arts and Sciences, it is a misconception that the human sense of smell is worse than that of animals. John McGann concludes:"For so long people failed to stop and question this claim, even people who study the sense of smell for a living, The fact is the sense of smell is just as good in humans as in other mammals, like rodents and dogs." He goes on to state "It has been a long cultural belief that in order to be a reasonable or rational person you could not be dominated by a sense of smell, Smell was linked to earthly animalistic tendencies."
His study has shown that the size of the human olfactory bulb, a receptor which sends neurons and electrical signals to other parts of the brains identifying smells, is actually quite large and has approximately the same number of neurons as animals.
Essentially, this study points out that the human sense of smell is just as powerful as any animal’s sense of smell. Even though an animal’s sense of smell may distinguish between specific traces, it does not mean that humans cannot smell the conglomerate of odors which make up everyday surroundings around us. In all, humans can identify about 10,000 different scents. Even so, each individual will interpret an odor differently — even when smelling the same thing at the same time.
Our human body is pretty amazing. It Can detect nuclear particles of nuclear fusion, 94.131 million miles away. We can feel barometric pressure changes down to 1 kpa (.145 PSI or about the weight of the leg of a fly), and we can detect odors down to .8 microns (.0003 of an inch).
What have we learned?
Just because you don't think something smells bad doesn't mean another person entering your home or your listing smells the odor the same as you.
You may be able to cover up the odors in your home or listing for your nose, but at the same time, you're likely causing the odors to get worse for guests or potential buyers.
The only real way to get rid of odors is to call Renovair.
